While research has come up with certain treatments to try and halt the effects of Alzheimer’s the reason for it’s onset is still unknown.
The protein TDP-43 behaves in a similar way, by attacking the brain and is linked to Mad Cow and Chronic Wasting Disease.
Scientific American has reported:
“Prions are misshapen yet durable versions of proteins normally present in nerve cells that cause like proteins to misfold and clump together, starting a chain reaction that eventually consumes entire brain regions.
In the past 15 years, scientists have learned that such a process may be at work not only in mad cow and other exotic diseases but also in major neurodegenerative disorders…”
It has been reported that around 25-30% of Alzheimer’s patients have TDP-43 pathology present, this is thought to be responsible for loss of neurons in the brain which causes memory loss.
It has been further suggested that humans are coming into contact with these TDP-43 proteins via contaminated meat, in particular confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs).
These CAFO’s are environments where the animals are exploited and mistreated, leading to a sub-standard kind of meat which poses health risks.
Cows are fed with genetically modified grains that are pumped with antibiotics.
Mad cow disease is thought to have originated in CAFO environments, the poor standards that are in place across many cattle farms.
The way that the brain is attacked during Alzheimer’s disease shows striking similarities to the way mad cow disease affects the body, and the presence of the TDP-43 protein in both diseases only serves to strengthen the link.
